2008 Tournament Review
John O'Leary 11/08/2008
The Welsh International Super Cup 2008 was hailed a great success, the week was full of exciting football and fun both on and off the field. Team Tours Direct thanks all participating teams for their conduct throughout the week and producing excellent entertainment for all those involved.
The tournament got off to a flyer on the Saturday with the launch of the Women’s Open Age tournament, the group games were really competitive with both TNS and Hereford Phoenix getting draws against the excellent Newcastle United. Finals day saw Newcastle United crowned both Super Cup and Challenge Cup winners. South Ceredigion picked the hard earned shield award.
The Class D category was highly competitive, Aberystwyth Academy proved too strong for SA of Columbia winning 3-1 over the Americans. Simla Youngs our friends from India were worthy winners in the Shield Round Robin. The team from the middle east have worked tirelessly on improving their football, and it paid dividends this year with them picking up some fine silverware. The success of the team has been down to the hard work of Tushar Dev and his team of coaches who are now starting to get the best from their players.
Marsaxlokk from Malta produced a great performance against the Jamie Shore Soccer Academy to win the Shield at Class F. South Ceredigion had a wonderful tournament at many age groups, the welsh outfit picked up the Challenge Cup in this category. Aberystwyth Academy gained the top prize once again proving their strength and depth in age groups across the board.
It was a pleasure having the teams from Dubai at the Super Cup, we must take our hat off to both E-Sports and Jebal Ali for their attitude on and off the field, both teams were exciting to watch playing in the true spirit of the game. Jebal Ali were particularly strong in category G winning the Challenge Cup, while Cobb FC from the USA received the Shield.
One of the most exciting competitions was at Class H, the category was split into 8 and 11 aside tournaments. Athlone DSL 83 and Athlone DSL 81 were a strong force from Ireland, The ’83 team were victorious in the Challenge Cup in both competitions whilst the ’81 were narrowly beaten in the 8 aside Cup Final by Borras Park Rangers from Wales.
The Cayman Islands were too a credit to their nation, the coaching staff and parents should be proud of their performance throughout a tough week of football. In class J they achieved the Shield award and also the experience of playing international opponents which will benefit them on their return home.
Class M girls produced one of the games of the tournament with CYP A beating the very good Motherwell Girls from Scotland in a highly competitive final.
The standard of football at this years tournament was excellent, the many scouts in attendance were also very impressed with the talent on show. Next year aims to be bigger and better as it will be the 25th Anniversary of the football tournament held in Aberystwyth. Team Tours Direct will welcome back all of this years participating teams to make the 2009 Welsh International Super Cup another great football spectacle.
